I am an 10-handicap member of Les Mielles in Jersey, where I am lucky enough to be able to regularly play some great golf both on the island and in France. I'm a traditional links golf addict and have an unofficial challenge with a good friend to play all classic links courses in Britain in a few weeks per year, of course using the Top 100 Golf Courses and its informed users as our Bible!
If I could only play at one golf course for the rest of my life it would have to be Royal Dornoch (gorse controversy not withstanding) – maybe one day I would birdie Foxy?
Inevitably Berkhamsted will be compared to Ashridge, but there is room for more than one heathland clasisic in the area. "Berko" may lack sand bunkers but the grass areas...
I've played Formby Hall a few times as part of Society tours to the many standout local links - Formby, West Lancs, Birkdale etc. However, it's a great place for a day of...
We played Craigielaw the first weekend in July as a 10 ball visiting society and had a great day.Given that the Gullane courses and North Berwick (West) were closed for t...
10 of us played The Glen on a lovely sunny day with the Firth an eery, glassy calm. Lots of skylark and oystercatcher calls on the breeze and great views to Bass Rock, T...
Having played Dunbar previously in Spring after hollow tining and being held up by a large golf society, I was keen to see how it played in the Summer as well as playing...
A little delayed, but having enjoyed reading back the reviews for this course I am prompted to a bit of revisionism for my original 5 ball review. We returned to the Roya...
To find Dunaverty basically go to the end of nowhere and it's about 2 miles south of there. Reminiscent of Portpatrick and other short but incredibly scenic and fun cours...
Played this last in Northern Ireland before the ferry across to Scotland. Very up and down, with the high ground remenescent of Bamburgh Castle - sporting golf, with gre...
We played the European on a lovely sunny Spring day.Booking the course I counted 3 different Ruddies who answered my no doubt annoying questions as our itinerary changed...
Played this as a bonus on the way up from Dublin to RCD. Memorable, unusual course with an amazing opening few holes. I was worried I was going to run out of balls after...
We played RCD in March during preparation for Irish Open, so were off mats for fairways (but not semi if your ball ended up there, if you know what i mean), but this enab...
Royal Portrush lays out for you when you drive around the coast from the East. Some great courses hide their splendour when approaching, such that you wrongly think eithe...
We played Portstewart in Spring after Portrush, and two holes in the duney front nine were out of commission, so naturally it would suffer by comparison. However, it was...
Castlerock followed RCD, Portrush and Portstewart on our tour, so it would be easy for it to have felt something of an anti climax. However, we played it in a howling ye...
Beautiful location for a classic course, makes a fascinating companion piece with nearby sand less Berkhamsted and the under rated Stocks. As per some other reviews, it's...
Played on a lovely early spring day, memorably started watching a solar eclipse from the car park whilst getting the clubs out of the car.Very quiet and unbelievable valu...
I'm lucky enough to have friends who are away members at Blackwell so have played it a number of times.A classic historic members club, classy but unshowy, with a course...
Visited Machrihanish in late March on a breezy sunny day.Still lots of ground water leading to some unanticipated forced carries! The pro was very welcoming and on top of...
Played Goswick on a foggy day on the way back down south from two weeks of Scottish links golf, from Machrihanish to Wick. Thus it is no faint praise to say that Goswick...
Easterly one/two club wind, true but not too quick greens, beautiful northern highland sunshine - Dornoch on a Spring day is heaven! Was eager to see the changes to the t...
