Although I have played golf for over forty years now (generally in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire) it is really during the last 10 years that it is has become my primary sport and my real interest in different courses has developed. This has been enhanced by the development of websites such as this and the increase in number of Open competitions, which is a great way to play different courses at a reasonable cost. I have been a single figure handicap golfer for about 10 years and am a country member of Saunton Golf Club. I played my 200th course in November 2016, and am a bit of a traditionalist golf course wise (not too keen on some modern layouts) and think course conditioning (in particular the greens) and location is more important than off-course food and clubhouse. I particularly enjoy links and heathland courses and my favourite courses to date would be Royal Porthcawl, Notts Hollinwell, Saunton (East and West). Other favourite gems would be Pennard, Cardigan, Llandrindod Wells and Parkstone. Royal Dornoch is top of my must visit list, and there are many areas of the UK I would like to visit... would be good to play at least one course in each county.
Returned in September 2020 to play the full course. Playing in a mixed open the course condition was much better than on my last visit. Greens were in generally good cond...
Newbury & Crookham offers plenty of interest for the visiting golfer, with a variety of holes. This is not basic parkland as it has some uphill holes, downhill holes, fla...
Kidderminster is set in amongst houses and roads, and is in places congested. Most holes are treelined, with much Silver Birch in evidence and I thought the bunkering was...
Enmore Park were very friendly and helpful, although the round was a bit slow. Post covid19 course conditions pretty good, with springy fairways nicely mown and true gree...
First played Tiverton a couple of years ago in teaming rain and my over-riding impression was of a lot of approach shots to concealed pins. Thought I should revisit on a...
A pleasant enough parkland track in a nice countryside location with some views. Although on top of a hill it's fairly flat and doesn't seem to be a taxing course with a...
Chipping Sodbury is a typical 1970's style of parkland course with numerous water hazards. I have played it a few times and twice post covid lockdown when it has been in...
Remedy Oak is nice. A a very modern style course with wide fairways set in very pleasant countryside, with each hole in splendid isolation cut through the expanses of hug...
Broadstone is quite an undulating open heathland course. I particularly like the first six holes which provide plenty of variety, including the delighful par 3 at hole 6....
Hindhead is an enjoyable course, and the pick of the holes are from the 2nd to the 7th which really utilise the valleys between the tree and heather clad banks. Quite a q...
I have played Northamptonshire County a few times over the years and have always found it a good parkland course. It has a tough start with a straight but long 454yard pa...
Another of those parkland courses in the Cardiff area, St.Mellons does seem a bit hemmed in and carpark and clubhouse areas on arrival seem in need of some tlc. I've play...
The reviews for Pyle and Kenfig do seem to have a consensus in that most think the front nine is below average and the back nine is very good. I fall in between in that I...
Tenby is a natural links course with nice views of the bay including Caldy Island. First hole reminds me of the tough first at Saunton East (although it does depend on wh...
Played Moor Hall in the summer of 2017. Course starts pleasantly enough and with par 5's at the 1st and 5th there is a chance of getting off to a good start. The early pr...
Hillside has a much heralded back nine but I have to say that although flatter I also thoroughly enjoyed the front nine and the opening holes had plenty of interest and s...
I've played a number of links courses with one good links nine and one lesser more parkland nine (Pyle & Kenfig, Porthmadog, Pwhelli etc) and Hesketh is similar albeit th...
Oswestry could best be described as mature rolling parkland. Sloping fairways mean that accuracy off the tee is required to avoid running off into the trees flanking the...
Ludlow golf course is set within the racecourse and therefore fairly flat but that should not detract from it being a pretty good golf course. I have played Ludlow a few...
The recent reviews remind me that since 2012 I have played Manor House (Castle Coombe) a couple of times, in August 2018 and November 2019, and so experienced the course...
