David Baxter

Although I have played golf for over forty years now (generally in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire) it is really during the last 10 years that it is has become my primary sport and my real interest in different courses has developed. This has been enhanced by the development of websites such as this and the increase in number of Open competitions, which is a great way to play different courses at a reasonable cost. I have been a single figure handicap golfer for about 10 years and am a country member of Saunton Golf Club. I played my 200th course in November 2016, and am a bit of a traditionalist golf course wise (not too keen on some modern layouts) and think course conditioning (in particular the greens) and location is more important than off-course food and clubhouse. I particularly enjoy links and heathland courses and my favourite courses to date would be Royal Porthcawl, Notts Hollinwell, Saunton (East and West). Other favourite gems would be Pennard, Cardigan, Llandrindod Wells and Parkstone. Royal Dornoch is top of my must visit list, and there are many areas of the UK I would like to visit... would be good to play at least one course in each county.

Neath 29/09/2019

14th South Wales - Best in Area 33rd Wales Ranking
First couple of holes at Neath are uphill from the clubhouse, the 1st being an ok par 5 but the 2nd is a totally blind par 3 which for me is fairly pointless. Hole 3 is a...

Wenvoe is one of what seems like a plethora of similar parkland courses in the Cardiff area. Three par 5's and three par 3's makes for a par of 72 with a white tee yardag...

The Monmouthshire (at Abergavenny) starts pleasantly enough with a short dog-leg par 4 followed by an uphill par 3 without margin left (ob) or right (a steep bank). A cou...

St. Pierre is dominated by large trees with huge canopies and must be a typical example of a mature parkland course. Played it in July 2017 and the greens were generally...

Newport Golf Club was to be honest a bit of a disappointment. The website says hole 2 is it's signature hole, and yes this is a nice well bunkered par 3, but nothing exce...

Enjoyed Cardiff GC. Although not long, with six par 3's, there are a number of long par 4's plus a couple of short par 4's making for a nice variety of holes. Most holes...
