I grew up with the 2nd green of the Bartlett Country Club in Olean, NY in my backyard. Caddied as a youngster and played on Mondays and was fortunate to get a junior membership at 14. Watered the greens and worked on the course through college and learned to appreciate a well-kept layout.
Played four years at Glenville State in West Virginia in the late 70's with the team winning three WVIAC Championships. Played on championship courses in all conditions at that time mostly in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Also played challenging layouts in Texas, Michigan, and North Carolina in the NAIA Championship.
After college moved to Virginia and had a job where I visited nearly every US state and the clubs tagged along many of the trips. Played many excellent courses and others that just happened to be where I was. Always have enjoyed playing no matter where. Every course is unique in its own way.
Now live back in Olean with the Bartlett in my front yard. Was on the green committee for about 12 years. Still enjoy playing the well-kept layout I grew up working at and playing on, and the friendly matches. Play in some tournaments with the youngsters and have been playing some senior events that are certainly very competitive. Have more recently enjoyed playing excellent links in Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands.
My favorite course in the US is Augusta, as I have never seen a place so close to perfection in all ways. In Europe my favorite course is Prestwick as it is the Birthplace of the Open – the start of all the great competitions all over the world. Besides playing my home course would probably want to play The European Club on a daily basis.
Like reading and writing reviews for the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World UK. Wherever I have gone it has helped me find great courses to play.
