I'm a member of Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville Tennessee. Holston is an old Donald Ross layout that is essentially unchanged from its original design over 75 years ago. I usually play between a 1 to a 5 handicap and enjoy playing in local and statewide tournaments. I fell in love with links golf on my first trip to the UK in 1980, and I've had the privilege of playing all of the current and past venues of the Open Championship, having completed the rotation several years ago when I was able to play Musselburgh Old. I'm trying to branch out and play as many top courses as possible and will try my best to give an honest and interesting review of the courses I play.
Since I've played most of the top courses in the UK and Ireland, I have decided to devote my later years to experiencing the great courses of my home country. First on th...
What a fun golf course to play. I took a group of 8 golfers to Scotland this summer, and I could only convince one other player to take in Lundin in the morning before o...
What else can be said about the Old Course that has not been said. It is truly memorable to stand on the first tee and drive away towards the Swilcan burn. History ooze...
So which is the best links course in the world? There are many opinions, but after my recent trip to Scotland I will now firmly cast my vote for the Ailsa course. Between...
This was my third trip to Muirfield over the past 15 years and each visit has been an exciting and exhilarating experience. This is a tremendous world class golf course t...
A glance at the reviews of this course on this site seem to reveal a "love it or hate it" dichotomy about this course. I was looking forward to playing the Castle course...
I don't think there's a course that is more fun to play in the UK and Ireland. North Berwick has always been one of my favorites, and it was well received and enjoyed by...
This was my 6th round at Carnoustie dating back to 1984, and this course has never ceased to amaze me with it's difficulty and strategic brilliance. This is an amazing c...
Last year, after playing Royal Portrush, I had stated that I had completed my lifelong goal of playing all of the past and present Open venues. Unfortunately I had made t...
What a wonderful golf course. I last played here almost 20 years ago in some of the most severe weather I ever remember encountering in the UK, yet I always held fond me...
On a recent trip to Scotland I had the chance to revisit some of the courses I had played over the last 30 years. 10 years ago I had played and reviewed Kingsbarns, and...
I was hoping that I would really enjoy this course, but unfortunately after all was said and done I felt somewhat let down. The opening holes are somewhat flat and in my...
After we arrived in Portrush to play the links on the coast of Northern Ireland, Portstewart was the course that all the locals raved about. After playing Castlerock, bot...
I truly enjoyed the Valley course. There is such a variety to links golf courses, and the Valley course is a fun, enjoyable but still challenging course. It's hard to sit...
The Mussenden links is an interesting collection of holes, and overall I found it to be both interesting and enjoyable. There are a few odd holes that seem out of charact...
This course was the most pleasant surprise of my recent trip to Ireland. It was the final course on our trip, and the lowest ranked course we played, so our expectations...
What a special round of golf this was for me. I first played the Old Course in 1984, and ever since that round I have wanted to play all of the open courses both past and...
This course is a real treat to play. Our welcome from the pro shop and clubhouse staff was second to none, and we even got a ride from the pro to the practice tee to war...
This course is a lot of fun to play. The opening hole is over 400 yards long, uphill and was into the wind. Despite the fact that I hit the fairway from the right side...
County Louth is an isolated gem. There is a great sense of isolation both on the approach to the course and while you are playing this wonderful links. The course starts...
