Ulrich Mayring

My name is Ulrich Mayring, I am based in Germany and currently play off 12. Continental and sometimes non-continental Europe are my main stomping grounds and over the years I have accumulated more than 200 course reviews. Most of them still await repurposing for this site, but performing double duty as the German Correspondent for Top 100 doesn't make the process any faster!

However, once I do get around to comment, I try to make it count. At http://gcescale.mayring.de I have described my guidelines for judging the quality of a golf course: quirk, scenery, shot values and flow. Using this system, the leaders in their respective countries turned out to be Cruden Bay, St Enodoc, Kennemer, Hamburger Golf-Club, Acquasanta, Hardelot Les Pins and Seefeld-Wildmoos. Among the modern courses my favorites are Belle Dune, Wendelinus, Le Querce, Millst├Ątter See, Cihelny, Gerre Losone and Harre Vig.

According to the club's history 14000 trees were planted during construction on a site that needed perhaps a handful. While the course doesn't feel completely tree-lined,...

This picture shows the view you get after duffing your drive off the "not so good first hole". I suspect most clubs would kill for such a hole. As you can see, it is (lik...

With a little bit of money this could be a Top 10 course in Germany and with a lot of money it might even challenge a few of the heathland greats in England. The little m...

Also on the Ring of Kerry, but much closer to Killarney, sits this previously hidden gem, which has been affected by a healthy infusion of tourist play. While still a ver...

The most spectacular dunes at Ballybunion aren't on the Old course, but on a site next to it, so it is no wonder that the club decided to build another course there. It i...
