I was a late starter to the game and am yet to reach the single figure handicap target I’d initially set myself. The Seniors Tour debut will have to wait a little bit longer.
During several years working for a Golf equipment manufacturer, my interest progressed from the golfing toys, the tournaments, & the players, on to the courses themselves.
I wouldn’t describe myself as a “list chaser”, but I do love experiencing interesting new courses. Top 100 is the perfect facilitator for this.
Amongst my favourite places visited so far are Brora, De Pan, and Bandon Dunes - and I always enjoy stepping in sheep poo at my home club Royal North Devon.
The par 5 8th hole at Brancaster is one of the best - or at least fun - holes I’ve ever played. And it’s so deceptively simple you could miss how effective it is. Or so d...
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single golfer in possession of good sense for history, must be in want of a trip to The Netherlands. After all, it was in th...
Bernardus goes straight to the very top of modern Dutch golf courses in my conceited opinion. I prefer it to The International, Lage Vuursche, Swinkelsche, and Stippelber...
The front 9 on this unassuming property near Mildenhall was enjoyable. It contained plenty of variety - half par holes, violent changes of direction, etc, but the most st...
Shiver Me Timbers, this place is excellent!
The first hole might be a gentle downhill drive and mid iron to an infinity green site introducing a lovely view, but from...
When tracing my roots I discovered that many years ago a Branch from my family tree had once excelled at The Belgian Open. He was possibly the only relative ever to hit 2...
One of my life’s biggest regrets is not having a go at the Tom Watson up & down attempt from the back of the 18th hole during the final round at the 2009 Open Championshi...
Taking an Uber to RMS directly from Heathrow ironically meant I was indirectly contributing to one of the criticisms thrown at this course. We didn’t get bothered by plan...
This place is a clearly a cut above the plethora of average modern golf courses in the Netherlands (where “modern” can admittedly evoke uninspiring design on poor land)....
Initial impressions after playing any course for the first time can often be influenced by preconceptions. My visit to Western Gailes was no exception. I already knew it...
This is a fantastic Golf Course. The location, routing, variety, and links credentials were all of a very high standard. And everything at the resort is purely about Golf...
Pleasant parkland walk with old school charm. Playing conditions were firmly firm in August 2016, the routing is well conceived, and the land undulates gently. The primar...
Part 1: (1893-2019):Royal Norwich opens with a Par 3, but it’s a good one that requires an accurate shot to a well protected green. The deceptively placed central bunker...
It was the best of times (playing The Island), it was the worst of times (a 4 club wind), it was the age of wisdom (€80 green fee in March), it was the age of foolishness...
Talk about an inauspicious start – a fairly tatty uphill par 3. The sweeping second might have been a better option as an opener, but in truth none of the plain sailing o...
The first 5 holes here are nothing special but things pick up on the run from 6-9, which see a coastal hole, a nice drive to an angled rising fairway, a squeezed short 4...
You have to admit the sound of a golf ball smashing into a tree trunk always has significant comedy value (as long as it’s your mate’s ball).
Here I was standing in a fa...
Walton Heath doesn’t get off to a great start. To get to the 1st hole, you cross a road from the clubhouse to reach this Par 3 (in itself rarely a good sign), and then cr...
Hilversum is a tough championship test and a peaceful tree lined walk in the forest. It’s also a bit narrow for the average golfer and you could argue a few holes are rat...
Taking a suggestion from my Golf travel agent Aberdeen Angus (a local firm), we tagged this course on to our Cruden Bay pilgrimage. I might be heeding their advice again...
