I completed playing the Top 100 in Britain and Ireland ten years ago and since then I’ve continued to play as many new courses as I can wherever I happen to be in the world. I travel a lot both on business and for pleasure and usually take my clubs with me. I’m prepared to play anywhere and not just the big-named courses – I’m just as likely to tee it up a local muni as I am on a top ranked course. I’ve played approaching 600 courses now and I tend to play around 40 new (to me) ones each year. I find it very exciting to tee it up for the first time on a course I’ve not played before. It’s really special.
Like nearby Deltona Club, Victoria Hills is on its uppers and badly needs some TLC. The once polished gem is now badly scratched and needs a makeover. The club has set it...
Played Deltona Club two weeks ago after a gap of four years. Unfortunately what was once a quality public access course has deteriorated. The club has issues with bare fa...
I played here while on a trekking holiday to Lorentz National Park, a vacation I’ll never forget. The setting is completely jaw dropping where snow capped mountains tower...
I was dismayed when Golfweek rated the Red & Black loops as one course in their 2018 Modern Top 100. This self-confessed box ticker felt he’d played two courses not one a...
The review below is harsh. Troon CC is by no means the best course in the Scottsdale area but it’s by no means poor. It’s certainly typical of the area but better maintai...
This is the second best 18-hole campus course I’ve played – only Yale is better in my opinion. Just like everything at the University of Notre Dame the golf course is per...
Blackthorn is a solid Hurdzan and Fry design that can be played for as little as $30 on Mondays and Tuesdays. Probably the best value quality course in the South Bend are...
Wow! Where has this course been hiding for nearly 100 years? Its location at Pleasant Valley does not do this classic layout justice. The valleys that are used to great e...
Snoqualmie Ridge was not long ago a TPC property and this Jack Nicklaus Signature design was highly ranked by GolfWeek in the late 1990s. Perhaps that was prior to the ob...
I can’t fault Gamble Sands, apart from the location, which is far from convenient – it took four hours to get here from Seattle. A quick mention about the staff, I found...
Wine Valley is really very good. Its massive length is countered by the firm and fast surfaces and we left the 7,600-yard gold tips well alone and played from the 6,700-y...
It’s quite likely that St Cloud is the nearest course to Paris city centre and the green course is definitely the better of the two layouts here. This is one of the trick...
I played Manufacturers the day after I played Rolling Green last September. It’s another solid Flynn design which I’m going to rate higher than Rolling Green because the...
I played Rolling Green last September for the first time and there is no doubt in my mind that this is one of William Flynn’s best designs. The greensites are among the m...
Waialae reminded me of an oceanfront Biltmore, I wasn’t inspired by either despite the Golden Age parallel, designed by masters but carelessly repainted down the years. I...
The redesign of Secret Valley has turned a pleasant holiday track into a must-play. Having visited Cyprus recently (also played Elea and Aphrodite Hills) I must say this...
Royal Ashdown Forest is an architectural example that modern architects could learn a lot from. Rarely will land like this become available but in my view this the best n...
There’s not a lot to choose between Crowborough Beacon and Royal Ashdown Forest in the Sussex rankings and one earlier reviewer suggests Crowborough should be ahead of Ro...
Piltdown may be short in yardage but on the numerous occasions I’ve played here I’ve always found it tough to play to handicap due to its series of tough par fours that a...
Royal Perak is not a course I can wholeheartedly recommend, but at least it resembled a golf course when I played here last January, unlike Clearwater Sanctuary. Perak wa...
