It’s remarkable how mature the golf course looks now when one considers that Cotswold Hills Golf Club only moved to its present site at Ullenwood in 1976.

Cotswold Hills Golf Club

Cheltenham Town Golf Club was formed in 1902, changing its name two years later to Cotswold Hills Golf Club. The club played on the public Cleeve Hill course up until the start of the 1970s, when a decision was made to relocate to a new 157-acre site on the other side of Cheltenham.

Designed by club member Morris Little, the layout at Ullenwood opened for play in May 1976. The course extends to just under 6,900 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 72, and holes are arranged as two returning nines, each of which is configured with two par threes and two par fives.

Feature holes include the shortest of the four par threes at the 159-yard 9th (which plays to a two-tiered green), the short par four 12th (doglegging slightly right to a sand-protected green), and the signature par five 16th which, at 597 yards from the tips, rarely offers a birdie chance.

The club was honoured to host the English Ladies Amateur Championship in 1981, only five years after the course was first brought into play.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
