The Grove XXIII Golf Club
There are few athletes in history who have had a cultural impact on the same level as Tiger Woods. One of them is Michael Jordan, hailed by many as the greatest basketball player of all time. The legend also has a notorious taste for golf, which prompted the construction of his own golf haven, The Grove XXIII.
Such a project was no doubt fueled by Jordan's wish for privacy while on the fairways, and the member list at this club — tucked way off the main stretch near Hobe Sound — almost lives up to his own dazzle.
The name of the club pays tribute to the number Jordan wore throughout his NBA career, however, players can expect a much higher number on the scorecard. Bobby Weed brought the layout out to more than 7,600 yards, worthy of testing even the numerous professionals who use its acclaimed practice facility. Jordan, always ambitious and reportedly playing off of a 1.3 handicap, surely doesn't shy away from long shots.
The course is designed to be all short-grass that accentuates ground contours. The routing is a double helix or figure of eight that allows play in 3, 6 and 9-hole loops. The two nines cross each other on holes 5 and 14 and are routed in opposite directions. Half-par holes are frequently encountered.
The practice facilities are also of note. A 400-yard long, double-ended driving range has two corridors, scaled target greens, and landing areas built to reflect the shot link data derived from PGA Tour play.
