The Ridge
Barden Ridge, New South Wales- AddressNew Illawarra Rd &, Recreation Dr, Barden Ridge NSW 2234, Australia
Ten years in the making, The Ridge Golf Course opened for play in 2013 atop old landfill site. Due to the technical aspects, involving nearly 2 million cubic metres of fill, The Ridge was the trickiest project that architect James Wilcher has dealt with to date.
Set within a sporting complex that also features six playing fields, twelve netball courts, an athletics track and an extensive driving range, the 18-hole layout measures just under 6,000 metres from the tips, playing to a par of 72, with holes arranged as returning nines. Water hazards come into play at several holes: a wetlands area surrounds three sides of the green at #2 and fairways ponds feature on #10 and #14.
Other notable holes include the short holes on the front nine at the 141-metre 5th and 137-metre 8th; (both with heavily sand-protected greens); the right doglegging par four 12th (where the green is guarded by five massive bunkers); and the 483-metre closing hole, with out of bounds to the left of the fairway as it veers slightly right towards the home green.
