Carnarvon

Founded in 1927, Carnarvon Golf Club moved to a new location in 1933 before decamping to its current premises just after World War II. Arthur East designed the club’s 18-hole layout which opened in 1949 after a 2-year build.

Occupying a long, narrow tract extending to no more than 110 acres, this tree-lined course measures 6,175 metres from the tips (playing to a par of 72) and holes are arranged as two returning nines, each of which start out from the clubhouse with a par five. Aquatic hazards come into play at a couple of holes: a long, thin irrigation pond runs along the right side of the par four 8th and there’s a larger water feature to the right of the fairway on the par four 18th.

Highlight holes include the 410-metre 2nd (where the tee shot is played blind to a fairway that doglegs left over the crest of a small hill before gradually descending to a bunkerless green); the 178-metre 7th (which is a downhill par three with three deep bunkers guarding the front, left and right edges of the relatively small green); and the 457-metre 17th, doglegging right to the target around a hundred metres short of the left to right sloping green.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
