TPC Southwind
Situated half an hour’s drive from downtown Memphis in the gated community of Southwind, the 18-hole layout at TPC Southwind is a private course operating within the Tournament Players Club network of golf facilities.
It’s a Ron Prichard original design (in consultation with Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller) which opened for play in 1988, a year before if first hosted the Federal Express St Jude Classic. Water comes into play at more than half the holes on a very strong test for the professional players.
The layout features rolling zoysia fairways and champion Bermuda greens, with numerous lakes and streams adding to the challenge. There’s also a couple of grain silos and a windmill retained on site, reminders of what was once a dairy farm on this site.
Highlight holes include the 165-yard par three 11th hole, a smaller version of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, requiring a short iron tee shot to a small island green; the 231-yard par three 14th, played to a narrow green with water to the right of the putting surface; and the 461-yard, par four 18th, featuring… yes, you’ve guessed it, yet more water down the left side of the fairway.

Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
