Vermont
Seven clubs founded the Vermont Golf Association in 1902 and nowadays it represents almost 11,000 golfers in 63 clubs dotted around the state. The Vermont State Women’s Golf Association provides a similar service for female golfers in 50 clubs. One course constructed in the late 1990s has risen to near the top of the Vermont rankings and it's the Graham Cooke-designed Country Club of Vermont near Waterbury Center. Great though that modern layout is, most still think the old Walter Travis track at Ekwanok and the Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek classic at Rutland still exemplify the very best in Vermont golf course design.
