Cumberland
Greystanes, New South Wales- Address248 Old Prospect Rd, Greystanes NSW 2145, Australia
The course at Cumberland dates back to 1935 when a private 9-hole course operated as Parramatta Golf Links. Two years later, Cumberland Country Club was established and consequently – on 18th September 1938 to be precise – a new 18-hole layout was brought into play.
New irrigation lakes were installed during the 1950s then an automated water system was introduced in 1981. Since then, a pipeline was constructed to secure extra water from the Prospect Reservoir and in 2015 the dam by the 12th hole was converted to hold fresh water.
Stretching to just under 6,000 metres, the tree-lined course plays to a par of 72 (37 out then 35 in) with holes arranged as two returning nines, each of which concludes with a par five. Water comes into play on several occasions, most notably on the front nine.
Due to the course occupying a very limited area of around 90 acres – which is completely hemmed in by housing – nearly every hole at Cumberland is oriented on a north-south axis.
Highlights include the par three 5th (with the green positioned to the left of a sizeable lake); the par four 7th (where tee shots must fly another lake to the fairway); and the short par four 17th which plays to a heavily sand-protected green.
