Surbiton Golf Club

The original 9-hole course at Surbiton Golf Club was laid out by Tom Dunn, the Tooting Bec professional, in 1895. Two years later, the layout was extended to eighteen holes. It’s thought that James Braid did some work after the Kingston bypass road was built in 1924 then he redesigned the 6th after World War II.

Today’s course extends to just over 6,000 yards, playing to a par of 70 (35 out then 35 in), with something you rarely seen nowadays – crossing fairways at the par four 1st and par four 3rd. There’s also another old-fashioned design feature at the 8th and 18th, where both holes share the same double green.

Highlight holes include the only par three on the front nine at the 174-yard 4th (played to an offset green); the long and narrow par five 14th (featuring a bunkerless green); and the right doglegging par four 18th, with out of bounds to the right of the fairway and a bunker on either side of the entrance to the home green.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
