Surrounded by suburbia, a mile to the east of Croydon, the course at Shirley Park Golf Club is a 1914 Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler production that remains almost true to the architects’ blueprint from more than a century ago.
Woodcote Park Golf Club was established in 1912 and founder members enlisted Harry Vardon to design their course, assisted by the club’s first professional, Montrose-born Tom Winton.

The Richmond Golf Club was originally fashioned by Tom Dunn in 1890s and 120 years later the course was renovated by the firm of Thomson, Perrett and Lobb which resulted in the layout being awarded Renovation of the Year for 2012.
Founded in 1894, Purley Downs Golf Club soon had a 9-hole course in play which was extended to 18 holes in 1903 by J.H. Taylor when further land became available. The club’s hilly downland course was altered again in 1920 and little has changed since.
Gatton Manor Hotel & Golf Club is now under new ownership, so we’re hoping to see the parkland course that John Harris designed in 1969 flourish once more. Who could forget the finishing hole which is one of the best in the region?
Rather like Moor Park’s West course, the Coronation layout at the Royal Automobile Club’s Woodcote Park property is the friendlier understudy to the club’s main Old course.
Opened for play in 1994 and co-designed by David Walker and Laura Davies, the course at Sutton Green Golf Club is routed in two returning 9-hole loops with water featuring on no fewer than nine holes.
