Surrey

Surrey is the premier county in English golf with more golf courses in the Top 100 than any other county. It’s also one of the biggest counties in English golf with more than a hundred clubs attached to Surrey Golf (formerly known as Surrey Golf Union). The Surrey Women's Golf was founded in 1929, six years after the men formed their golf Union. Nowadays, the women’s governing body looks after the interests of around 7,000 female golfers in more than a hundred clubs.

    Co-designed by David McLay Kidd and Tom Watson, the Beaverbrook golf course at Cherkley Court quietly opened its tees for play in late September 2016.

  29. West Byfleet Golf Club

    Originally named Bleakdown, the course at West Byfleet Golf Club was designed by the Scottish professional Cuthbert Butchart in the early 1900s. Although it only stretches to 6,197 yards, it’s still a wonderful test for proficient golfers.

  30. It’s classically British at Woodcote Park at the exclusive Royal Automobile Club. Herbert Fowler originally designed the RAC's Old golf course and it offers a lovely parkland challenge in the heart of Surrey.

  31. Likened by some to the Old course at Sunningdale, the Longcross golf course at the 45-hole Foxhills Resort partners the club’s Bernard Hunt course. The Longcross is a lovely tree-lined layout that requires accuracy and should not be underestimated.

  32. Addington Palace Golf Club

    Once the home of the Archbishops of Canterbury, Addington Palace Golf Club is set in mature rolling parkland and it presents an honest golfing test.

  33. The Old Deer Park is a pretty spot and it's home to Royal Mid-Surrey, one of London's greatest golf clubs. With two courses, both designed by JH Taylor, the Outer (now called JH Taylor) is the premier layout.

  34. Guildford Golf Club

    Guildford Golf Club was founded in 1886 and here on the North Downs at Merrow you’ll find the oldest golf course in Surrey. Measuring a mere 6,160 yards, Guildford isn't long but it’s tough to play to handicap.

  36. Banstead Downs

    Touched by J.H. Taylor and James Braid, Banstead Downs Golf Club was inaugurated in 1890 and this natural, recently extended, 6,581-yard, lie-of-the-land course is routed over free draining chalk downland.

    Woodcote Park Golf Club was established in 1912 and founder members enlisted Harry Vardon to design their course, assisted by the club’s first professional, Montrose-born Tom Winton.

  38. Kingswood Golf & Country Club

    Founded in 1928 and designed by James Braid, Kingswood Golf & Country Club is located a mile to the north east of Walton Heath and is a relatively unknown venue, except to those in the know.

    Founded in 1894, Purley Downs Golf Club soon had a 9-hole course in play which was extended to 18 holes in 1903 by J.H. Taylor when further land became available. The club’s hilly downland course was altered again in 1920 and little has changed since.

    Puttenham is one of the oldest golf clubs in Surrey, founded in 1894 by a group of Army Officers, Charterhouse School Masters and local businessmen.

    Sunningdale Heath Golf Club was formed in 1902 as Sunningdale Ladies Golf Club, with women playing on an 8-hole course. Harry Colt later extended this layout to eighteen short holes, on ground next to the front nine of the Old course at Sunningdale Golf Club.

  46. Croham Hurst

    Croham Hurst Golf Club was Frederick George Hawtree’s inaugural design, which he laid out in cooperation with James Braid in 1912. Situated near Croydon, it remains a highly respected members’ course.

  50. Tyrrells Wood Golf Club

    The James Braid ledger contains an entry for March 1922 which records an income of ten guineas plus expenses of ten shillings for design work relating to the course at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club which first opened two years later. It’s claimed that Harry Colt subsequently carried out some unspecified work on the course.

    Surrounded by suburbia, a mile to the east of Croydon, the course at Shirley Park Golf Club is a 1914 Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler production that remains almost true to the architects’ blueprint from more than a century ago.

  52. Pyrford Lakes Golf Club

    Berkshire, England

    First opening for play in 1993, the 18-hole layout at Pyrford Lakes was designed by Clive Clark and Peter Alliss. Tree-lined fairways are routed around several large lakes on a flat landscape, with water playing a large part in proceedings at more than half the holes.
