Mission Hills Country Club was formed in 1917 and Tom Bendelow is credited with the original design of the golf course. Keith Foster carried out a major renovation in 2007, focusing on improved greensites to defend par on the layout.
Built on either side of the railway line into Newton, the golf course at Sand Creek Station features a replica of the world famous Road Hole green at the par five 16th hole.
Founded in 1900, Wichita Country Club moved to its present location in 1950. A recent project to replace grass in areas of rough with Riviera Bermuda has reduced water consumption and improved playability on the course.
Featuring bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens, Buffalo Dunes Golf Course has operated as a public facility since 1976. Staff loyalty here is such that there have only been four golf pros and four superintendents since the course first opened.
Founded in 1905, Topeka Country Club had a 9-hole layout in play a year later, designed by Tom Bendelow. When a decision was made to redesign the original layout and add another nine holes, Perry Maxwell was called in to plan and oversee the work.
Owned by the city of Leawood and operated by Troon, the 18-hole layout at Ironhorse Golf Club has recently had its bunkers re-lined, with new white sand installed. Off the course, a clubhouse extension has also just opened.
Situated less than half an hour’s drive southwest of Kansas City, the course at Canyon Farms Golf Club is a Tom Jackson and Tom Kelly co-design featuring a number of forced carries and elevation changes, which opened to the public in 2007.
A former US Senior Open qualifying venue laid out within a 182-acre rolling landscape, the Prairie Highlands Golf Course is a Craig Schreiner new millennium design that’s marketed as “a wee touch of Scotland, prairie-style!”
The course at Indian Hills Country Club is an A.W. Tillinghast design dating back to 1926. After ten days on site developing plans, the architect called it “one of the greatest opportunities I have ever had for creating a notable course”.
In the words of its esteemed architect, the Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate 18-hole layout is “outstanding for several reasons, including its beautiful views, rolling fairways and capability to challenge both the amateur and the seasoned golfer.”
