Massachusetts

The Country Club at Brookline was formed in 1860 and was America’s inaugural Country Club, but members had to wait until 1893 before a rudimentary 6-hole golf course was ready for play. However, Myopia Hunt Club was the golf course that really got things going in Massachusetts, playing host to four early US Open Championships, most recently in 1908.

    At 6,223 yards, the Seth Raynor-designed layout at Dedham Country & Polo Club is a little short, thanks largely to it having only two par fours in excess of 400 yards and one par five longer than 500 yards.

    Designed by Ed Seay with Arnold Palmer in 2002, the golf course at TPC Boston underwent a significant renovation by Gil Hanse in 2007 and this work has greatly enhanced the strategic challenge.

    Architect Brian Silva completed a restoration of the Donald Ross-designed course at Vesper Country Club in 2009 when he rebuilt all eighteen greens to USGA specification.

  23. Oyster Harbors Club

    Massachusetts, United States

    A private island resort situated on the southern shore of Cape Cod, developer Norris W. Norris formed the Oyster Harbors Club in the mid-1920s and enlisted Donald Ross to design the course that remains largely intact today.

    Venue of the 1919 US Open, the 1928 US Amateur, the 1958 and 1970 Curtis Cup and the US Women’s Amateur in 1906, 1975 and 1997, Brae Burn Country Club has hosted more than its fair share of top golf competitions.

    Cape Cod National Golf Club was designed by Brian Silva and opened for play in 1998. Already used as a US Open Qualifier and one of the premier layouts in Massachusetts.

  26. Tedesco

    Massachusetts, United States

    Tedesco Country Club is a 1920s design by Skip Wogan, laid out as two contrasting nines: the outward half is routed across former flat farmland with the inward half carved through hilly, forested terrain.

  27. Black Rock Country Club

    Massachusetts, United States

    In 2002, Brian Silva stylishly shaped the 18-hole layout at Black Rock Country Club on the site of an old quarry, routing the fairways over, around and between substantial rocky outcrops.

  28. Miacomet

    Massachusetts, United States

    Owned by the Nantucket Island Land Bank, the links-style layout at Miacomet Golf Club was extended to an 18-hole course by Howard Maurer in 2003 then renovated by the same architect five years later.

  29. Weston Golf Club

    Massachusetts, United States

    Donald Ross laid out the original 9-hole course at Weston Golf Club in 1917, returning five years later to add another nine. Geoff Cornish replaced two holes (the 11th and 12th) in 1965 and all the bunkers were upgraded in 2003.

    Set on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, overlooking Nantucket Sound, the course at Farm Neck Golf Club was designed in two halves – front nine by Bill Robinson & Geoffrey Cornish and back nine by Patrick Mulligan.

    Plymouth Country Club engaged Donald Ross to set out a new 18-hole course during the 1920s. Three of the old master’s holes have since been lost but the layout remains a fine example of his work.

    Host to the US Women’s Open in 2004, the Orchards Golf Course at Mount Holyoke College is a 1920s Donald Ross design that was constructed by industrialist Joseph A. Skinner for his daughter Elizabeth, a promising golfer in her youth.

    Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill is Brian Silva’s inaugural Signature creation, which dates back to 2005. The course pays homage to golf’s Golden Age and is set in the tranquil and picturesque Merrimack Valley.

    Set within a generous 340-acre site, the course at The Ranch Golf Club was designed by Damian Pascuzzo and its mix of woodland, meadow, creek and wetland makes for entertaining golf.

    Massachusetts, USA

    Host venue for the 1916 U.S. Women’s Amateur championship, the Donald Ross-designed course at Belmont Country Club has been modified and upgraded a number of times down the years, most recently by Craig Schreiner in 2005.

  36. George Wright Golf Course

    Massachusetts, United States

    Opened in 1936, the George Wright Golf Course is a Donald Ross design. It's reputed that 60,000 pounds of dynamite, 72,000 cubic yards of top soil and 57,000 linear feet of drainage pipe was used for its construction.

  37. Crumpin-Fox

    Massachusetts, United States

    The first nine at Crumpin-Fox Club was completed in 1977. A decade later, after a change of ownership, Roger Rulewich was called in to add another loop and renovate the original nine and this new layout debuted in 1990.

  38. Red Tail

    Brian Silva carved the fairways at Red Tail Golf Club out of the forest on the old army base at Fort Devens. The 17th is not called “Bunkers” because of sand traps, the name refers to ammunition bunkers situated at the green side.

    Designed by Geoff Cornish in 1950, the course at Nashawtuc Country Club underwent a Rees Jones renovation early in the new millennium, resulting in upgraded bunkers, rebuilt tees and greens, and the installation of a new drainage system.

  43. Oak Hill Country Club

    Wayne Stiles set out the first 9-hole track at Oak Hill Country Club in 1921. Six years later, Donald Ross added another nine and redesigned five of the original holes (#1, #2, #4, #6 and #9).

  44. Indian Pond

    Massachusetts, United States

    Opened in 2001 and designed by California-based architect Damian Pascuzzo, Indian Pond Country Club lies within a densely forested landscape, where fairways are set out around an upmarket real estate development.

  45. Wellesley

    Massachusetts, United States

    Many golfing greats have graced the fairways at Wellesley Country Club and it’s said Francis Ouimet visited the club a week before becoming the first amateur to win the US Open in 1913 – he’s said to have played all his bad shots here before the big event.

  46. Thorny Lea

    Massachusetts, United States

    Wayne Stiles and John van Kleek added another nine holes to Thorny Lea Golf Club’s original 9-hole course in 1925. The expanded layout was then inaugurated with an exhibition match involving former US Open Champion Francis Ouimet.

  47. Concord Country Club

    Massachusetts, United States

    Concord Country Club, formed in 1895 as Concord Golf Club, commissioned Donald Ross to lay out an 18-hole course for the membership which was carried out in two stages, building the first nine in 1915 then adding another nine thirteen years later.

  48. Blue Hill (Championship)

    Massachusetts, United States

    The Championship course at Blue Hill Country Club is a 1925 Skip Wogan design that Ron Prichard lovingly restored in 2003. Keeping it in the family, the architect’s son Phil also laid out the club’s 9-hole Challenger course in 1961.

  49. Cohasset

    Massachusetts, United States

    Willie Campbell set out the original 6-hole course at Cohasset Golf Club but Donald Ross expanded this initial layout to eighteen holes in two stages by 1920. Ron Prichard (in 1999) and Ron Forse (in 2014) have since conducted course renovations.

  50. Bay Club at Mattapoisett

    Massachusetts, United States

    Conveniently situated close to the main Interstate 95 highway, the Bay Club at Mattapoisett is an early new millennium design from Brad Booth which was literally carved from the dense woodland area that overlooks Mattapoisett Harbor.

  51. New Seabury (Ocean)

    Massachusetts, United States

    Designed by William Mitchell, opening for play in 1962, the Ocean course at The Club at New Seabury has a split personality.

  52. Waverly Oaks

    Massachusetts, United States

    Designed by Brian Silva, the 18-hole championship layout at Waverly Oaks Golf Club first opened its doors to the golfing public in 1998. Back-to-back par fives at the 4th and 5th are real feature holes on this engaging track.

  53. Pinehills (Nicklaus)

    Massachusetts, United States

    One of two new millennium 18-hole layouts at Pinehills Golf Club, the Nicklaus course was first unveiled to the public in 2002. Designed by the Golden Bear’s oldest son Jack Jnr, the course places great emphasis on precision approach play.

  54. Woods Hole

    Massachusetts, United States

    Founded in 1899 with views across Buzzards Bay, Woods Hole Golf Club started out with a 9-hole course designed by Thomas Winton which was expanded to 18 holes by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek two decades later.

  55. Pinehills (Jones)

    The Rees Jones-designed course at the 36-hole daily fee Pinehills Golf Club is routed dramatically over undulating ground and it's rated slightly tougher than the Nicklaus layout, but only just.

  56. Wianno Club

    Massachusetts, United States

    Gil Hanse has been consulting at Wianno Club since 2012 and we’re sure he’d agree that Wianno’s short-legged, giraffe-shaped routing gives Cape Cod’s striking fishhook form a run for its money.

  57. Granite Links (Granite & Milton)

    The 27 holes at Granite Links are laid out on top of two former landfill sites and old granite quarries. Incredibly, 900,000 truckloads of spoil from Boston’s “Big Dig” road tunneling project were used in course construction to cap the site with thirteen million tons of material.

  58. Stockbridge

    Massachusetts, United States

    Dating back to 1895, Stockbridge Golf Club has played host to a number of important events down the years, including the 2008 Massachusetts Open. In 2018 the 6,659-yard course staged U.S. Open Qualifying.

  59. Ipswich

    Massachusetts, United States

    Robert Trent Jones was eighty-three years young when Ipswich Country Club opened its tees for play in 1989. One of the master’s final designs plays tough through woodland where housing does influence proceedings from time to time.

  60. Shaker Hills

    Massachusetts, United States

    First opened for play in 1991, the course at Shaker Hills Golf & Country Club changed hands in 2012 and the new owner’s first move was to construct a new 18th hole, bringing the home green closer to the clubhouse.
