Portugal

Situated on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula with a long Atlantic coastline, it’s not surprising that Portugal has a rich seafaring heritage. In 1415, the Portuguese discovered new ocean routes and they set sail to conquer new continents.

  1. Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer, took ownership of the spectacular Terras da Comporta development in 2019. The site comprises two enormous plots: the 365-hectare Torre in the Alcácer do Sal municipality, and Dunas which extends to around 1,000 hectares in the Grândola municipality.

  2. Set in the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

  3. West Cliffs

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Located an hour’s drive north of Lisbon on Portugal’s spectacular Silver Coast, West Cliffs is a Cynthia Dye design that opened its doors to golfers in June 2017.

  4. Palmares is billed as the golfing “jewel in the crown of the Algarve” and it’s certainly an eclectic golf course, which originally opened in 1975, with distinct flavours.

  5. Oitavos Dunes

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    The golf course at Oitavos Dunes is a lovely mix of woodland and links-type holes that have been expertly laid to make the most of the existing landscape.

  6. Quinta do Lago (South)

    Algarve, Portugal

    American architect William Mitchell raised the bar in terms of golf course architecture here at Quinta do Lago by importing American standard greens, tees and bunkers. In May 2020 the South course closed for major renovation work which took more than a year to complete.

  7. Dom Pedro Old is the original and eldest course at Vilamoura but it's also the best. Grand, pine-lined, strategic and in tune with Mother Nature.

  8. Praia D'El Rey Golf & Beach Resort

  9. San Lorenzo Golf Course

    Algarve, Portugal

    San Lorenzo is a classy golf course, routed in a figure of eight on sandy undulating terrain​ alongside the Atlantic, with fairways bordered by umbrella pines and the marshland bird sanctuary of the Ria Formosa.

  10. Quinta do Lago (Laranjal)

    Algarve, Portugal

    The Laranjal course is the new kid on the block at Quinta do Lago and the reputation of their third course already is growing.

  11. Quinta do Lago (North)

    Algarve, Portugal

    The South course at Quinta do Lago is the layout that most avid golfers rush to play, but the North course, formerly called the Ria Formosa, named after the Nature Reserve, is definitely worth savouring.

  12. Penha Longa Resort (Atlântico)

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    The Atlântico, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, opened in 1992 and received such acclaim that it played host to the Portuguese Open in 1994.

  13. Amendoeira (Faldo)

    Algarve, Portugal

    Faldo’s course at Amendoeira calls for golfers to play strategically, avoiding the desert scrub bunkers, rocky outcrops, wandering water hazards and olive trees that lurk in wait for errant shots.

  14. Estela Golf Club

    Porto & North, Portugal

    Estela is a wonderful golf course with all of the features expected of a true seaside ‘links’ golf course and will be a great test for any standard of golfer.

  15. Dom Pedro (Victoria)

    Algarve, Portugal

    After an investment of €18m in 2004, the fifth golf course at Dom Pedro opened for play. Arnold Palmer designed the Victoria and it’s a big layout that was built with tournament play in mind.

  16. Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Measuring nearly 6,700 metres from the tips, Royal Obidos golf course is one of the last creations from the design stable of the late Seve Ballesteros and it opened its tees for play in January 2012.

  17. Furnas

    Azores, Portugal

    You’ll need to fly into the middle of the Atlantic to the Azorean island of San Miguel to find Furnas but to play this course only once is worth the trip alone.

  18. Quinta do Peru

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Quinta do Peru is located to the south of Lisbon and it’s one of the greatest courses in the area. It’s also one of the most exclusive, but thankfully you can still get a game if you book in advance.

  19. Vale do Lobo is one of the Algarve’s most senior golf resorts, founded in 1969 and it is currently the largest luxury resort in Portugal. The Royal course mixes nine of Henry Cotton's original holes with nine fashioned by Rocky Roquemore in the 1990s.

  20. The Quinta de Cima course has been designed with tournament play in mind and its inbuilt degree of difficulty is meant to attract the more accomplished amateur as well as the professional golfer...

  21. The Ocean course at Vale do Lobo is perhaps the understudy to the Royal layout, but nevertheless it’s a solid sandy course and it stands up on its own two feet.

  22. Porto Santo

    Madeira & Porto Santo, Portugal

  23. Vidago Palace

    Porto & North, Portugal

    The original 9-hole Philip Mackenzie Ross golf course at Vidago Palace was remodeled by the Cameron Powell design company during the refit of the hotel and opened for play in 2010.

  24. Santo da Serra (Machico & Desertas)

    Madeira & Porto Santo, Portugal

    Pray for a clear day when you play Santo da Serra. Perched at some 1,000 feet above sea level, the golf course can literally have its head in the clouds.

  25. PGA Aroeira No. 1

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Frank Pennink, the master architect, designed Aroeira (Pines Classic) in 1972 and the course hosted the 1996 and 1997 Portuguese Opens.

  26. Quinta da Ria

    Algarve, Portugal

    Opening for play in 2002, the Quinta da Ria golf course was designed by architect Rocky Roquemore, and it's a traditional par 72 layout measuring 6,016 metres from the back tees.

  27. Morgado Golf Course

    Algarve, Portugal

    Golfe do Morgado is one of the newer courses to be laid out in the Algarve and it’s also one of the region's tougher layouts.

  28. Espiche Golf

    Algarve, Portugal

    Designed by South African architect Peter Sauerman, the course at Espiche Golf Club is set in an Ecological Reserve, where the landscape has been left as undisturbed as possible.

  29. Ribagolfe (Lakes)

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Measuring 7,370 yards from the tips, the Ribagolfe Lakes course was designed by Peter Townsend and European Golf Design with tournament play in mind.

  30. PGA Aroeira No. 2

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Situated within a preservation area, on the Setubal Peninsula, lies Aroeira Golf Resort. A 900-acre paradise for golfers and non-golfers alike.

  31. The future is bright for the Christy O'Connor Jnr. course at the Amendoeira Resort, which opened in October 2008, in fact, the architect “wanted one hole where it was just oranges”…

  32. Penina was built on land that was originally used for growing rice and it was the Algarve's first golf course which was fashioned by Sir Henry Cotton.

  33. Palheiro

    Madeira & Porto Santo, Portugal

    Palheiro is set magically within a pine forest and is bordered by glorious botanical woodlands. Factor in its elevated location, high above the town of Funchal and you have the recipe for perfect golf.

    The Vale da Pinta golf course, set in the Pestana Golf Resort near Carvoeiro in the Western Algarve, is a course that accepts the ‘quality’ label with ease.

  35. Donald Steel created the course at the Vila Sol Golf Resort without the need for excessive contouring or the creation of unnatural hazards.

  36. Ribagolfe (Oaks)

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    The Oaks course at Ribagolfe opened for play in 2004 and was designed by the European Golf Design Company in collaboration with former Walker and Ryder Cup player Michael King.

  37. Belas

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    Located between the town of Belas and Vale de Lobo – a short drive (by car) from Lisbon city centre – is the pretty golf course of Belas Clube de Campo.

  38. Quinta da Marinha

    Lisbon & Centre, Portugal

    The championship course at Quinta da Marinha is set within a luxury 5-star resort close to Cascais, a former fishing village on the Estoril coast that’s now a modern day affluent suburb of the Portuguese capital.

  39. The original layout at the Pinheiros Altos Golf Resort consisted of the Pines and Olives nines but the addition of the 9-hole Corks circuit in 2007 ousted the Pines from fashioning half the leading eighteen holes at this 27-hole facility.

  40. Dom Pedro (Pinhal)

    Algarve, Portugal

    The Pinhal is one of the older courses at the sprawling Dom Pedro golf complex, opening as a Frank Pennink-designed layout in the mid-1970s.

    One of the most historically important golf clubs in the country, Estoril was instrumental (along with Oporto, Miramar and Lisbon Sports Club) in forming the Portuguese Golf Federation in 1949.

    Porto & North, Portugal

    The eldest club in Portugal (and fifth oldest in Continental Europe after Pau, Dinard, Biarritz and Royal Antwerp) was renamed Oporto Golf Club in 1901 and it remained an exclusive British preserve for the next three decades.

  45. Largely overshadowed by the reputation of the Furnas golf course on the Azorean island of San Miguel, Batalha deserves greater recognition as a top class golf facility.

  46. Half the holes on the Dom Pedro Millennium course once belonged to the former 27-hole Laguna course and the other nine were added to create a new 18-hole layout.

  47. CampoReal

  49. Quinta do Vale

    Algarve, Portugal

    The course at Quinta do Vale Golf Resort is a Seve Ballesteros design and it’s configured with six par threes, six par fours and six par fives, with the same par never repeated at consecutive holes.
