Golf was first played at Arcachon in 1895 but the club folded immediately before World War II. Cecil Blandford was tasked with the installation of a new 18-hole course in the mid-1950s, allowing Golf International d’Arcachon to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the old club.
Located just outside Strasbourg in the Rhine Valley, the 18-hole layout at Golf de la Wantzenau is an early 1990s production from Jeremy Pern which is routed around a number of small lakes on a very flat landscape.
Golf de la Nivelle dates back to 1907 when J.H. Taylor, five-time Open champion, laid out a course on a hilly site between the Atlantic fishing village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Pyrénées for the founding members.
Established in 1895, the original 9-hole Old Course at Golf & Tennis Club de Valescure was extended to 18 holes by Harry Colt in 1910. Today, measuring just over 5,000 meters from the medal tees, this delightful tree-lined layout remains much as it was over 100 years ago.
Located less than half an hour’s drive from Montpellier city centre, the course at Golf de Massane-Montpellier is a late 1980s design from Ron Fream, built at a time when the American architect was heavily involved in a number of French golf projects...
Situated close to the southern end of the Brittany coast, the Golf Bluegreen Saint-Laurent’s championship 18-hole Les Pins course first appeared in 1976, with the 9-hole Menhirs layout added a short time after to fashion an engaging 27-hole facility.
Lying in the shadow of Mont Blanc, the original 9-hole layout at Golf Club de Chamonix was inaugurated in 1935. It then took almost half a century before Robert Trent Jones finally expanded the course to an 18-hole track in the early 1980s.
The course at Domaine de Charmeil is set on the floodplain of the River Isere so – as might be expected on such flat terrain – natural water hazards play a prominent part in proceedings as the round progresses on this entertaining layout.
