The Netherlands, or Holland as it is often misguidedly known, is one of Europe’s most popular destinations. Amsterdam’s tulips and its colourful sometimes alternative scene, attracts millions of visitors each year.

  1. The similarity between this Dutch linksland and that of the British coastline is uncanny. Koninklijke Haagsche Golf & Country Club (or Royal Hague) is an exacting layout which pitches and rolls across undulating land.

  2. Host to the Dutch Open on three occasions, Utrecht de Pan Golf Club is a strategic and exacting layout which requires thought rather than muscle, especially during the homeward nine.

  3. As soon as you arrive at Kennemer Golf & Country Club and you catch a glimpse of the undulating links land and the thatched-roof clubhouse, you know you are somewhere special.

  4. Eindhovensche Golf was inaugurated in 1930 and the great Harry S. Colt routed the course through a dense forest a few kilometres to the south of Eindhoven.

  5. Noordwijkse is classic links course on undulating linksland with each hole winding its way through the dunes and occasionally, in a Formby-like style, through pine woods.

  6. Hilversumsche

    Hilversumsche Golf Club is one of the most exclusive clubs in the Netherlands but thankfully you can still get a midweek game if you book in advance.

  7. Rosendaelsche

    Netherlands

    Rosendaelsche Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs in the Netherlands (formed in 1895) and is heathland golf at its very best, played over gently undulating forested terrain.

    The Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche layout was fashioned by Kyle Phillips and it opened for play in the year 2000. This was an ambitious restoration project which aimed to revert flat farmland back to its former glory of rolling terrain flanked by woodland.

    The Hoge Kleij golf course opened for play in 1985 and during its construction, a number of Bronze Age and Iron Age items were found on site...

  11. You won’t need your passport to board the first tee at The International at Amsterdam Airport, just take your normal golfing gear. But if you’re a plane spotter you might get distracted.

    Opened for members play in May 2011 and known simply as “The Dutch”, this new Colin Montgomerie inland links-marketed golf course was at the heart of Holland’s bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

  13. Noord-Brabantsche Golf Club Toxandria was founded in 1928 when Harry Colt laid out a nine-hole course on a small parcel of sandy heathland located between Breda and Tilburg.

  14. Golfbaan Stippelberg is a wonderful new addition to the Dutch golfing scene. Architects Michiel van der Vaart , Philip Spogaard and Gerard Jol made the most of the dream landscape for their first new project.

  15. Bounded on three sides by woodland, the Swinkelsche golf complex is a wonderful example of just what can be achieved through modern construction techniques for a relatively modest cost.

  16. The 27-hole golf complex at Golfclub Heelsum is a new millennium design by Hans Hertzberger which lies to the north of the Nederrijn River, close to the city of Arnhem.

  17. Gelpenberg

    Set next to the village of Aalden, the course at Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg is an early 1970s production from Frank Pennink and Donald Steel which features an open outward half and wooded inward half, with both nines returning to the clubhouse.

  18. Wouwse Plantage

    Frank Pennink set out the original 9-hole Wouwse Plantage woodland golf course at the end of the 1970s and it would take just over another decade before Paul Rolin added a further nine holes...

  19. Goyer (North)

    Netherlands

    The North course at Goyer is very flat, as you would expect in this part of the world, with clever use of water, waste bunkers and mounding at many of the holes.

  20. It’s one of four golf complexes in the Netherlands that operate under the banner of Het Rijk “The Empire” and its tight, tree-lined holes are laid out within woodland to the south of the small market town of Nunspeet.

  21. De Texelse

    Netherlands

    Architect Alan Rijks set out the original De Texelse 9-hole course in 1996 then he returned in 2014 to expand the layout by adding another nine on adjacent farmland so the club now boasts an 18-hole links-style layout...

  22. Lauswolt

    Netherlands

    Golf & Country Club Lauswolt was the first golf club (1964) to be formed in Friesland and two years later a 9-hole Frank Pennink-designed course opened. Three decades later, Donald Steel expanded the layout to 18 holes.

  23. Domburgsche

    Netherlands

    Domburgsche Golf Club was founded in 1914 and the 9-hole pure links course was commandeered by the Germans during WWII and subsequently bombed by the Allies. The craters now form wonderful revetted bunkers.

  24. Geijsteren

    Netherlands

    Founded in 1974, Geijsteren Golf and Country Club started out with a nine-hole course, designed by Donald Steel and Frank Pennink, which was expanded to 18 holes in the 1980s.

  25. Sallandsche

    Netherlands

    Originally set out as a 9-hole track by Frank Spalding in 1933, the course at Sallandsche Golfclub on the 'de Hoek' estate was eventually extended to an 18-hole layout by Donald Steel sixty years later.

  26. De Haar

    Netherlands

    Formed in 1974, Golfclub De Haar operated a 9-hole course in the Zuiderpark of the Haarzuilens estate – next to the Kasteel de Haar – until 2020, when Bruno Steensels rebuilt the original course and added another nine holes.

  27. The layout at Noord-Nederlandse Golf & Country Club was established by Guy Campbell in 1954 then extended to eighteen holes by Frank Pennink in the early 1980s. A decade later, Donald Steel carried out further course modifications.

  28. Lochemse

    Netherlands

    Lochemse Golf & Country Club, also known as “De Graafschap” was founded in 1987, but it took six years before the first nine holes of this Eschauzier & Thate design were ready for the members to play.

  29. Houtrak

    Netherlands

    Constructed in the mid-1990s on land reclaimed from the IJmuiden estuary between Amsterdam and Haarlem, the 18-hole course at Houtrak Golf Club is a challenging layout located within an attractive polder site.

  30. Herkenbosch

    Netherlands

    Herkenbosch Golf and Country Club lies on the edge of the De Meinweg National Park and it's a beautiful forest course, hewn out of a dense pine forest...

  31. Links Valley

    Netherlands

    Never a man to shy away from innovation, architect Frank Pont devised the reversible 9-hole layout at the Links Valley golf facility just outside Ermelo, allowing the North course to be in play one day then the South course the next day.

  32. Dommel

    Netherlands

    Founded in 1928, De Dommel Golf Club’s original 9-hole Harry Colt course expanded over the years to 18 holes under the architectural stewardship of Frank Pennink, Joan Frederik Dudok van Heel and Frank Pont.

  33. The Heuvelrug (Hillside) and Heide (Heather) nines – also known as the B & C loops – form the course of first choice at Golf Club Anderstein but the Vallei (Valley) nine should not be dismissed at this impressive 27-hole facility outside the small town of Maarn.

  34. Edese

    Netherlands

    The course at Edese Golf Club Papendal is located in the wooded and hilly landscape of the southern Veluwezoom, just outside Arnhem, where an 18-hole layout has operated since 1993.

  35. Broekpolder

    Netherlands

    Frank Pennink originally designed Booekpolder Golf Club and he turned a flat, featureless landscape into an exciting, open parkland course. It’s now something of a modern Dutch master.

  36. Twentsche

    Netherlands

    Twentsche Golfclub was founded in 1926, making it one of the oldest in the country. In the late 1990s, Irish architect Tom Macauley designed the 18-hole layout that’s now in play today.

  37. Haviksoord

    Netherlands

    Occupying a property that was once the site of an aircraft factory, the original nine holes at Haviksoord Golf Club opened for play in 1976, with another nine following thirty years later.

  38. Hooge Graven

    Netherlands

    The golf facility at Hooge Graven Golfclub Ommen started out in 1993 with a 9-hole course which was extended ten years later to the 18-hole layout that’s currently in use, along with a 9-hole par three course.

  39. Oosterhoutse

    Netherlands

    Founded in 1985, Oosterhoutse Golf Club has had an 18-hole course in play since day one of its formation. The arrival of an Academy course in 2017 resulted in the introduction of four new holes on the main layout.

  40. The Duke

    Netherlands

    Set out across the former hunting grounds of the Dukes of Brabant, the 18-hole layout at The Duke Club is an Alan Rijks redesign of an old 9-hole course that was known as De Hooge Vorssel.
